By default, Ubuntu is packed with Unity Desktop environment, also other flavors are available like Ubuntu Gnome, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Cinnamon. Ubuntu is Popular and Best Linux Distro, used by many new Linux users. On my Ubuntu systems I tend to try and keep to 2 or 3 flavor DEs installed (plus WMs), installing/using only 4 or more DEs ( plus WMs) if I've the time to deal with any issues that will tend to appear. One of the main feature of Linux Distributions, you can customize that with any Desktop Environments. If I'd not been steered that way & wasn't as heavily involved with Lubuntu my answer would probably be Xubuntu using Xfce/Xfwm4 ( though having a single DE/WM installed just isn't me!)įYI: I do like how on Debian, OpenSuSE, even Fedora, I can bloat the system down with more DEs than Ubuntu seems to allow ( before issues start appearing). If I was only allowed a single DE I'd install Lubuntu using LXQt/Openbox, but that's heavily influenced by my involvement with Lubuntu. ![]() GNOME/Wayland, GNOME/Xorg, GNOME Classic/Wayland, GNOME/.) Do note I don't have 22 (or 23) DE/WMs installed some have multiple listings (eg. I select at login which I'll use for the session/day, with I think 22 or 23 choices on this box at login ( including every DE & WM mention in this thread so far). So hard in fact, I don't choose, and have a bloated file-system because I bloat my system down with many DEs & WMs installed. įor me each has pros and cons, and I find it very hard to choose. I do find myself using ICEWM somewhat often, as well as other WMs, but they're hardly a 'favorite', just nice for a change. I have many WM's installed ( including FVWM used by TheFu), but I mainly use them when using older boxes with limited RAM (1GB for example). ![]() ( I'll stop mentioning/listing DEs due to length) I loved KDE4 but some of that magic got lost as it moved to KDE5, but I still have KDE installed and use it on occasion, and I can feel why I loved KDE4 now and again, but then realize it's not the same and I find myself logging into another DE/WM the next day usually. I loved GNOME2, and whilst MATE isn't identical it's the ~closest to what used to be my favorite ( I find I can make Xfce feel identical too LXQt almost) On a number of boxes I have MATE installed, it's nice, functional & does not annoy me. ![]() GNOME and Cinnamon tend to annoy me, so I login with them less often, and often logout & switch to something else as they're not favorites of mine, but hey they're both installed. Traditionally my installs were always Ubuntu Desktop ( I could download that ISO quota free but not flavors), and rather than remove it (Unity/GNOME) and add the desktop I really wanted, I'd usually leave the default installed as I worry more about RAM being used thus not disk space, thus I have GNOME installed too on most, but I can't really call it a favorite, it's nice for a change though. I also love/like Xfce thus it's installed on most of my boxes too. My most used is LXQt ( hey I'm on the Lubuntu team, so that's expected isn't it!) and I do love/like it.
